I'm not a total riot; I'm not the funniest person that you'll ever meet but once in awhile people are kind enough to call the sarcasm that I find a home in "wit" and my strange way of viewing life as "hilarious".

I am a fan of the funnies. Or the funny papers. Or the comics. Mostly the first two endearing titles. I have some in my purse tucked away in preparation for combat against a very dull moment. I believe they are the best part of the newspaper. Not only are they in color-but they come with jokes. What could be better?

My favorite comic is probably garfield minus garfield. I adore it. I laugh out loud all over it.

Growing up, my family was big on funny. It was get funny or get out. Laughing at yourself seemed key. Still does.

I guess that's my favorite part about the funny story. The power it gives. Not everyone finds the same things laughable, but when you decide to laugh at an event-you are in essence choosing what is funny and what is not. What can be trivial and what can not be. It could be the most powerful thing you do all day.

Coming home from what I felt was a hard day's work as a 16 year old bus girl in Alaska, I would complain to my mom as soon as I entered the door, but I realized as the words were coming out-that they didn't sound as depressing and dark as my day felt, they sounded ironic, uncanny, and undeniably...funny.

What was going on? I had planned on a pity party and what I was getting was an audience. When I heard the words I was saying and considered them from another person's perspective, I realized how ridiculous everything became. It was the difference between winning & loosing. It didn't make it better, but it made it workable. Almost worth it. I fluctuate between believing that really good material makes really bad life experiences worth it, and that they don't. Right now I'm with the latter.

The power is not usually even the person telling the story but the person receiving the story. Through them our lives can become a little less serious.

I remember calling up my best friend at an unfortunate point in my then 19 -years- of- life. While most of my friends had told me how sorry they were to hear about my situation, she just-flat out, laughed. Loud and brash and long. Before long I was laughing too. She apologized. I said "no, that's awesome-that's the best I've felt all day. At least this is serving some purpose" and she asked "you do realize how pathetic this all sounds don't you?" and the thing was, I hadn't. I hadn't realized it at all till she said that. That's why she's my best friend.

Issue 02 is out. We hope you laugh your tie off, or at least get a few chuckles in. It's 80 pages jam packed with beautiful brilliance. If it's not on your wishlist, it will be.
What's up. It's me again. I'm 6 months old now. I'm in that rebellious phase where I go and run and jump on the bed when mom tells me to go play in the yard. I'm milking my puppy status for all its worth.

Anyways, the theme for Method Press's second issue is out and it's a funny story.

We'll clue you all in later as to how we choose these themes each issue. It's pretty neat.

But now's the time--send in submissions [written] to methodpress@gmail.com and photo submissions to our flickr pool. We can't wait to look through what you create!

Keep in mind that written submissions can be themed or unthemed, and they don't have to necessarily be artistic either. If there is a funny story that shaped you from your day job, or some minute detail of your every day life-we'd love to hear it. We love to see things creatively represented, so surprise us!

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. You can look through the first issue of method press here, read our mission statement for inspiration here & see more pictures of me here. Method Presshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00486356500431245128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086006045668881191.post-82218365751250411742011-05-27T13:34:00.000-07:002011-05-30T09:53:23.233-07:00And the beat goes on

The beat goes on, the beat goes on
Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain
La de da de de, la de da de da
The grocery store's the super mart, uh huh
Little girls still break their hearts, uh huh
And men still keep on marching off to war
Electrically they keep a baseball score

The first issue of MP has been completed and out for a while now.
Method Press is about to make its big debut. Hooray! But if you're really impatient, here's a little taste of what's to come. I had the privilege to put together a few photos and an essay for the first issue of MP, and it was such a lovely experience. I took an early morning drive around the countryside, clicking my little camera to my heart's content. Be sure to check out the whole story, and many others, when Method Press goes live! Eeek!
I am really impressed that we have managed to come together despite being in several time zones.

Bonjour! I am Ashleigh and although I hold a degree in Resource Biology, I am somewhat considered a design ninja. I like to slay MS Publisher whenever I get the chance whether it is making cards or newsletters or even a magazine. I am especially enjoying working on this magazine and the process of putting it all together. I have wanted to make a magazine but had no clue on where to start. I so happened upon Katie's thread calling for anyone interested in making a magazine. I immediately thought "hell yeah!"

And so here we are, about to launch our first issue! I like the uncluttered and "clean" look that is emerging. Lots of great artists and beautiful photographs to view and read about. I am also impressed and honored to be working with some very talented ladies. Like my photograph, we are waiting for our chance to shine!

Bien a toi,

Ashleigh
ash coynerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02447989644600484610noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086006045668881191.post-75032236776653045832011-04-10T16:41:00.000-07:002011-04-11T14:08:29.844-07:00clinks a glass from the deepest place on earth

In a mere two days, our premier issue of Method Press will be sent to the press. I'm going to act calm, and pretend that typing that first sentence does not give me a micro panic attack. I don't know when the idea of making a magazine popped into my head, or what encouraged me to pursue it beyond raw experimentation, but I did.

I could not have done it without the help of some very fine and foxy women. Namely, all the gals you can research under the "our team" tab up above. Let me tell you a little something about how we put all of this together. We started on a flickr group in December and decided to make our magazine with many of us having zero idea of what we were getting ourselves into, we organized ourselves into teams and proceeded to buff this publication from our prospective computers, locations, and time zones.

Collectively, we do not even have the ability be able to view the document on the same software! And somehow, with Ashleigh's hard work, Dee's saving grace in being my right hand gal, Mandy's cool calm & collected presence, and Sara's crossing of T's and dotting of I's, we will soon have in our hands a finished product to call our own. Not to mention the wonderful contributions of our Girl Friday, Jen Stanley, our emergency article writer-Galia Alena, and our terrific superhero contributors who made this magazine what it is-Anika Toro (just wait till you read her article), Teresa Chipperfield, Trina Baker, and Julia Williams (not only flawlessly designing both the logo and the back cover, but being constantly available for improvements and helping out with design).

Many of these women told me that they would be able to give about 2 hours a week to making Method Press. I laugh as I type this because we all know we have been putting in about 2 hours...a day! I'm so grateful and astounded for these wonderful workers who let me pretend that I have the slightest clue about what I am doing, honoring my aesthetic & mission and teaching me a lot about teamwork.

No matter how this magazine changes and grows in the future, I will never forget the original team that gave me the support to make it happen in the first place. Brava, Girls.

We can't wait to show you what's in store.

As I am president of this publication, I still feel a bit as I am watching it from afar, from my house in a cul-di-sac in the middle of the Philippine sea next to Mariana's trench, the deepest place on earth.

Hello! I'm Sara. Despite the fact that all the important folks have the word "editor" in their titles, I'm the one who actually edits Method Press. A love for grammar runs through my veins. I distinctly remember learning what a noun is in first grade, and I've been hooked on language ever since. In ninth grade English, I was the weird girl who thoroughly enjoyed diagramming sentences. I spot apostrophe errors and misspellings all around me, and it drives me nuts. I often photograph them and have an on-going collection here. I even read about grammar, as you can see.

Editing is natural for me. I resist urges to correct people on a regular basis (it's rude, I'm told.) So you can imagine how delighted I am to find opportunities in which people ask me to correct their language mistakes! I've edited a lot of things in my life--my husband's thesis, my master's program's policy manual, my professor's publications--but I must say that this is by far my favorite editing gig to date. I'm happy to be a part of the Method Press team! :)Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02904864711817715472noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5086006045668881191.post-25336358379896254992011-04-08T07:49:00.000-07:002011-04-08T07:57:05.478-07:00Fluffy Monster Shout-out

Collectively knows as "the monsters", we are the super-goofy fluffy kids of Method Press's Senior Editor person. Like Gretel's mom, our mom isn't really doing much editing either, and figures she needs to find a better title. She thinks our real editing and design team totally rock. Working with all these cool people putting together the mag has been very fun for her, even though she doesn't really know what she is doing. She can be pretty goofy like that. She gave us Cheetos for this photo, however. We kept taking turns bouncing up and down because we are soooooo cookie-deprived we could not help ourselves! We were almost as bouncy and overpowering as we are when it is time for our walkies!

We fluffies want to give a big shout out to Hansel and Gretel. We wish you could chase balls with us and annoy the neighbor dogs. There is also a cat around here somewhere - she was giving us the Evil Cat look so we are plotting to annoy her at a time when she is off guard. Mom says cats are not snacks. :( This totally bums us out!

Later!

yo. I'm Gretel. I'm the newest resident dog child of Method Press's editor in chief. I've always thought that was a strange term because she's not a chief, she's just my mom-and she doesn't really edit-we've got an editor that does that named Sara. But she did have the grand idea of putting this magazine together and knows just how she wants to go about it. That's pretty cool I guess.

But really I'm not the biggest fan of MP yet, cuz it means mom is in the office and I can't go in the office so I'm back downstairs with Hansel. Doing dog things like chewing bones and sleeping and chasing my tail.

Anyways, we're under construction right now. But I'm sure you'll see me back here pretty soon.
Method Presshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00486356500431245128noreply@blogger.com0
